Depending on whether you believe the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) or the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), liposuction is either the most popular or the second most popular form of plastic surgery, after breast augmentation. What makes liposuction so popular? Liposuction is popular because it targets the fundamental elements of the aesthetic form of the body, making it both effective and universally applicable.
The Rare Human Body
The human body has a number of unusual features. Not only does it feature the commonly- praised large brain and the opposable thumb that are ostensibly responsible for our evolutionary rise from animals to civilized beings, but it has another less commonly praised anomalous structure: a layer of subcutaneous fat which is currently shared by only one other class of terrestrial mammals: pigs. This layer of fat, partly responsible for the wick effect that is behind so-called “Spontaneous Human Combustion,” is shared by many aquatic mammals (although in them it is called “blubber”), leading some evolutionary theorists to postulate for an aquatic phase in human evolution that would also account for the relative hairlessness of the human body.
However, despite the oft-touted affinity of the human baby for water, it is more likely that the subcutaneous layer of fat has another purpose in common with hairlessness: it is aesthetic in purpose. The subcutaneous layer of fat gives shape and softness to the human body, a cushion for the visible and tactile surface that makes humans attractive to one another. Because this subcutaneous layer of fat is specifically there to make us look good, liposuction, which targets this layer of fat, becomes a key element in what is known as body contouring, the shaping of the body. In liposuction, a narrow tube, or cannula, is inserted into the fat layer, then suction is used to remove fat through the tube.
Universal Applicability
Nearly every cosmetic surgical procedure that is performed today can be enhanced or accented with the use of liposuction. In the face, a facelift or necklift can either be enhanced or even replaced with a liposuction, which can provide proper definition for a neck area in which fat has accumulated, leading to a poor definition of the jawline and chin. The aesthetic effect of a breast augmentation can be enhanced by the reduction of fat deposits in the abdominal area, and any tummy tuck procedure would most likely provide incomplete results without some measure of liposuction. Liposuction can be used on the arms, the legs, the upper and lower back, the flanks, virtually everywhere. The majority of cosmetic surgeons will not use it on a woman’s breasts, although they do use it for the reduction of swollen breasts (Gynecomastia) in men.
Diverse Techniques
Liposuction is also not a single, unified field of practice. There are many different forms of liposuction available, including:
· Tumescent liposuction, in which the area to be treated is injected with a high amount of fluid intended to make the procedure more effective with less ancillary tissue damage
· Power-assisted liposuction, in which a moving gouge on the end of the cannula breaks up the fatty tissue, making the procedure faster
· Ultrasonic liposuction, in which ultrasound is used to cause the fat cells to burst, ideally removing fat preferentially without doing too much damage to surrounding tissues
· Laser-assisted liposuction, in which a laser is used to burst fat cells during suction
All these liposuction techniques are designed to perform some parts of the liposuction process better, whether the removal of fat, or the minimizing of damage to surrounding tissues, or the speed of the procedure. While all liposuction will lead to you experiencing some pain and needing downtime for recovery, the type of procedure and your doctor’s technique can make a big difference in the area. Before working with any plastic surgeon, talk to former patients about their experience in terms of not only the effectiveness of the procedure (which can be seen in before and after pictures), but also about the patients’ experiences with the doctor and with recovery.

What Is Liposuction ?
Many Americans have only a vague concept of what liposuction is. Simply put, liposuction is the surgical removal of fat cells through a stainless steel suction tube called a cannula. Liposuction was first performed in 1974 and was a tremendous improvement over previous surgical body contouring techniques. There have been many advances in liposuction procedures over the last few decades, making it one of the safest and most popular body contouring surgeries in the world…
Are You a Good Candidate for Liposuction ?
If you are considering liposuction, it is important that you have realistic expectations. Although dramatic results can be achieved, they may not be as immediate or obvious as you would like. As with all plastic surgery, the success of liposuction will depend on a number of individual factors, such as age, skin elasticity, weight, and overall health. Liposuction is not appropriate for people with a weakened immune system, diabetes, heart or artery problems, or a history of blood clots or restricted blood flow…
Types of Liposuction
There are several types of liposuction procedures available, all of which use a wand-like instrument called a cannula to remove unwanted fat. Tumescent liposuction involves the injection if a large amount of anesthetic into the area being treated; the wet and super-wet techniques are variations of this type of liposuction. In ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL), sound waves are used to liquefy the fat before it is removed. LipoSelection® uses the same concept without disturbing the surrounding tissue…
The Liposuction Procedure
The basic liposuction procedure involves the insertion of a small, tube-like instrument called a cannula through tiny incisions made by the surgeon. The cannula then breaks up and vacuums away unwanted fat deposits beneath the skin. Local or IV sedation will be used, depending on the type and number of liposuction procedures you undergo…

Liposuction: Plastic Surgery for the Removal of Excess Fat
Liposuction is the technique by which localized deposits of fat are removed using thin cannulas (tubes) through tiny incisions. Liposuction is also known as suction lipectomy, liposculpture, and SAL (suction assisted lipectomy). Liposuction has been performed for many years, but the most significant advances in liposuction techniques have occurred over the past two decades.
The level of safety and efficiency in liposuction has been dramatically increased by the “pre-wetting” of the fatty tissues with a solution that delivers local anesthesia as well as epinephrine, or adrenaline, to constrict the vessels within the tissues and substantially minimize bleeding during liposuction surgery.
What types of liposuction are available?
The main liposuction techniques are tumescent liposuction and superwet liposuction, both of which utilize the infusion of wetting solutions to provide anesthesia and vasoconstriction (shrinking of the blood vessels).
The additional liposuction modalities include SAL (suction assisted liposuction), PAL (power assisted liposuction), UAL (ultrasound assisted liposuction), VAL (vaser assisted liposuction), SmartLipoTM (laser assisted liposuction), SlimLipoTM (laser assisted liposuction), and others. The benefits of these liposuction modalities are emulsify fat during or prior to liposuction. The laser liposuction modalities are purported to promote tissue tightening, although the effects have not yet been definitively proven.
What types of anesthesia are used for liposuction?
Liposuction can be performed with local anesthesia (tumescent liposuction or superwet liposuction) only, with IV sedation or twilight anesthesia, or under general anesthesia. The extent of liposuction and the areas that require treatment will determine the type of anesthesia.
What areas can be treated with liposuction?
Liposuction can be used to remove fat from virtually any area of the body. Thigh liposuction, tummy liposuction, love handle liposuction, flank liposuction, back liposuction, arm liposuction, ankle liposuction, chin liposuction, and neck liposuction are all common. Breast liposuction can also be performed in selected cases.
Can liposuction treat cellulite?
Liposuction is excellent for reducing excess localized fat deposits, and generally smoothing body contour. Unfortunately, liposuction is an imperfect solution for cellulite. Liposuction for cellulite alone rarely corrects the problem, although in selected cases, followed by other external means (such as EndermologieTM, massage, VelaShapeTM, or others), liposuction may play a role in cellulite reduction. A consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon is recommended to determine your candidacy for cellulite treatment with liposuction.
Are there risks with liposuction?
Liposuction is frequently associated with some bruising and swelling, and is self limited. Liposuction results are usually visible by 12 weeks from the liposuction procedure date as the swelling resolves. Occasionally, lumps, bumps, or irregularities can result from liposuction, and may require corrective surgery. More dire complications are extremely rare, but must be considered before choosing to undergo liposuction surgery. A thorough discussion of the benefits, risks, and alternatives of and to liposuction with a board certified plastic surgeon is imperative before liposuction surgery.
What is the cost of liposuction?
The cost of liposuction varies depending on the region(s) treated, and the extent and time during liposuction surgery. Small areas may be treated for ,500, and more extensive liposuction of multiple areas of the body may cost -10,000. The surgeon’s fee, facility charge, and anesthesia fees all factor into the final cost of the liposuction procedure based upon your particular needs and desires.
Can liposuction be combined with other procedures?
Liposuction is very often combined with other surgery. Most commonly, liposuction is combined with tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty with liposuction, or lipoabdominoplasty). Liposuction can be performed at the same sitting with breast plastic surgery or facial plastic surgery as well.
Can my fat be used elsewhere after liposuction?
Fat cells from one area of the body can be very safely and effectively be transferred to another by fat grafting (autologous fat transfer). Liposuction is often performed using a suction machine called an aspirator. Because of the intensity of the suction, the liposuction machine is not used, and the fat is first hand-harvested using gentle suction with syringes. Once the fat harvest is sufficient, the liposuction procedure may be continued with the liposuction aspirator.
Who is the best candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is ideal for women and men who are at, or close to, their ideal body weights. At lighter weights, the fat cells in our bodies occupy less space, and can be more reliably and safely removed by liposuction techniques. To determine if liposuction is right for you, and if so, what liposuction techniques will be best, a full evaluation and thorough discussion with a board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in cosmetic surgery is recommended.
