Conclusions: Treatment of cells with a membrane stabilizing agent P188 may be a new strategy for cryopreservation of fat without the potentially toxic effects of DMSO. Although more study is needed to optimize the effect of P188 on frozen grafts, this polymer may provide a clinically viable agent for the banking of adipose tissue. Additionally future directions of this technology are wide reaching, with the possibility of cryoperservation beta-islet cells for transplant, or even as a whole organ preservative.
