For some individuals, the neck begins to show age faster than whole face and many times patients only need a neck lift, rather than a full face lift. Patients may elect to have a neck rejuvenation procedure done because of either age, rapid weight loss, or a genetic predisposition. This procedure is very appealing to both men and women because although fat in the neck region may be an indication of obesity, it may be present even in individuals of normal weight. As aging progresses, submental fat deposits typically increase, regardless of the individuals weight. This may be more apparent as the skin loses elasticity and begins to hang. Individuals may be eager to improve the silhouette of their neck because fat in this area is the “giveaway” for obesity. In addition to removing fat, the procedure appears to stimulate the contraction of the skin, giving the appearance of skin removal. Patients may chose to have a submental or jowl liposuction for several reasons. Jowls can form from fatty deposits at the jaw line and laxity in the muscles, the neck muscles may begin to separate and hang, creating bands and the skin may hang more that we’d like creating the turkey waddle look. In this case, the platysmaplasty procedure may also be helpful. The platysmaplasty, or neck lift, is a surgery designed to reduce the loose look of sagging skin in the neck area and under the jaw line.
